Westside Dental in Central NY practices sedation dentistry to ease the dental anxiety of our patients and allow them to get the dental care that they need. As dentists, we commonly see patients who are frightened and have severe anxiety about having any dental work done. We at Westside Dental understand your apprehension. Conscious sedation is a safe and comfortable way to get your teeth taken care of without the stress. Our dentists have been trained in conscious sedation, and we stay up to date with the current developments by continuing our education.
How Does It Work?
Often, a prescription of Valium is called in by the dentist which the patient is supposed to take the night before the procedure. Your companion will accompany you to our dental office. You will be drowsy. You will be given pills one hour prior to the start of your dental procedures. Once sufficiently sedated, your procedure can begin. Your vital signs will be monitored while you are relaxing in the dental chair. Nitrous Oxide (oral sedation) can be used in conjunction with conscious sedation dentistry.
Westside Dental in Central NY removes teeth through simple or surgical tooth extraction methods. A dental extraction is a removal of a tooth from the mouth. Tooth extraction procedures are far less painful than they used to be because of the strong local anesthetic sedation used. In most cases, patients who have tooth extractions experience little discomfort and minor bleeding. Our dentists will use topical gel or spray to numb the area before Novocain is injected to reduce the discomfort. After extraction, sometimes antibiotics and strong pain pills are required, depending upon the procedure, to make sure infection does not occur.
The Most Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction
A badly broken tooth or extensive decay where root canal therapy, fillings, or crowns are not enough to save a tooth
Extra teeth, which are blocking other teeth from coming in (often recommended by
Inefficient space for wisdom teeth
Severe gum disease, which may affect the supporting tissue and bone structure of teeth
Smoking, drinking liquids from straws, and vigorous brushing are discouraged for a postoperative period of a few days. These will delay healing or even prevent proper healing. The use of cold compresses after extractions can help reduce discomfort and swelling and promote faster healing.
Dentures are a great option for people who are missing teeth. Whether the teeth were lost due to disease, malnutrition, an accident, or a genetic disorder, dentures are a reason to smile again.
Westside Dental in Central NY offers both full and partial dentures to our patients, including same-day dentures.
Complete or partial dentures help in chewing and support the facial muscles while also helping to improve speech. Conventional dentures are removable. However, there are many designs available, which rely on clasping on dental implants and onto teeth.
Dental implants are replacements for the roots of your teeth. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. Implants and dentures are great for improved appearance, improved speech, improved comfort, easier eating, and improved self-esteem.
Westside Dental in Central NY offers crowns and bridges for patients who need to replace one tooth or several teeth.
Crowns are ideal for when a patient’s existing tooth does not need to be pulled but can instead be covered by a crown. It often requires 2-3 visits to complete the process. On the first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth after removing the decay. Impressions of the prepared tooth are taken and sent to a laboratory to create the crown. A temporary crown or cap, which is made of plastic, is placed on the tooth until the permanent crown is ready. If the temporary falls out, patients should call the office as soon as possible.
Crowns Can Be Made Of
All Ceramic or All Porcelain
Metal That May Be Cast Metal Alloy or Gold
Porcelain Fused to Metal
A bridge is an option for patients who need to replace one or more missing teeth. Tooth or teeth loss can affect not only the way you look but also your speech and chewing efficiency. Bridges are usually a false tooth or teeth suspended between two crowns. Traditional bridges are the most commonly used made of porcelain fused to metal, which is an excellent combination of strength and aesthetics.
On your first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared for the crowns. Temporary crowns or a temporary bridge can be made to protect the exposed teeth while the permanent bridge is being made. On your second visit, the permanent bridge is checked, fitted, and adjusted. Once the patient feels comfortable, it can be placed with permanent cement.
